1 How to write and cite Chicago 16th edition style
Katie Howell

2 A brief run-down  Notes-Bibliography Documentation System (aka Humanities): used for works on history, literature, and the arts. (you will use this one) A great way to organize a researched work that has many sources Footnotes and Bibliography easily references sources Author can comment on own ideas or sources in the footnotes When used appropriately, avoids plagiarism Author-Date System: used for works in social sciences (you will NOT use) Be sure to click on Notes-Bibliography when looking up a reference guide

3 Annotated bibliography
Why do you make one before you write the paper? Annotated Bibliographies have a paragraph (or more) of information about the source under each entry. They show that you know the source material and that you haven’t just skimmed article titles. They also aid in the planning process; providing a nebula for incorporating sources into the ideas of the paper. Annotations “may summarize, some may assess or evaluate a source, and some may reflect on the source’s possible uses for the project at hand” (Purdew Owl Online Writing lab).

4 Bibliography format Bibliography page after main text (insert page break) Entries are single-spaced with a space in between each entry and annotation Entries should have a hanging indent with the annotation also indented Entitled “Bibliography” with 2 spaces before first entry.

5 Sample of an annotated bibliography entry
Noske, Noske, Frits. Don Giovanni: Musical Affinities and Dramatic Structure. Studia Musicologica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae 12 (1/4). Akadémiai Kiadó. This journal entry discusses the social issues in Don Giovanni, suggesting that Mozart was making very intentional statements about social tension and gender roles. This article argues against those who believe that Mozart was indifferent to social and political activity, citing specific examples in his music and giving a clear analysis of the different characters. Rushton, Julian.  Mozart. Oxford University Press This biography of Mozart’s life and work draws conclusions between the events of Mozart’s life and the music he created. The chapter on opera buffa discusses Mozart’s development of this style of opera and his processes of writing this music. It also describes some of his ideas for characterization and his relationship with his librettist.

6 Bibliography Entries Typical book entry: Last name, first name. Title of Work. Publication city: publisher, publication year. Anderson, Hugh. The New Century Bible Commentary: The Gospel of Mark. England: Marshall, Morgan & Scott, 1984. Article & Periodical entry: Last name, first name. “Article Title.” Publication Title. Publication date and issue information: pages. URL or database title if online. Schiller, Rebecca. "Midwives supporting women's rights." The Practising Midwife 18, no. 9 (October 2015): 5. MEDLINE, EBSCOhost (accessed February 10, 2017). Dissertation and Thesis entry: Last name, first name. “Title of work.” Source type identifier (PhD diss. Or Master’s thesis), University name, publication date. Hostetler, Tara. “Bodies at War: Bacteriology and the Carrier Narratives of ‘Typhoid Mary.’” Master’s thesis, Florida State University, 2007.

7 Main body basic format Main body should be double-spaced, 12pt font, Times New Roman Blocked quotes are indented and are single-spaced Page numbers on top right-hand corner, except on the title page Using headings and sub-headings are a great way to organize your paper! Headings should be on a separate line, centered and bold-faced. 2 level subheadings centered and regular-typed.

8 Title Page Title should be centered a third of the way down the page, all caps Subtitles go under the title after a semicolon Name and class info (still centered) several lines down

9 What is the difference between these two entries?
Pollan, Michael. The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals. New York: Penguin, 2006. 1. Michael Pollan, The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals (New York: Penguin, 2006), 99–100.

10 Footnote formation DO NOT simply copy and paste bibliographic entries into footnotes; they have a different format! NOTE: when writing page numbers, only write the actual number (12-14), NOT (Pgs ) Book: 1. First name last name, Title of work (publication city: publication press, date), page numbers cited. Scholarly Journal: 2. First name last name, “Article Title,” Journal Title, issue information (date): page numbers cited. Dissertation 3. First name last name, “Title of work,” (PhD diss., University, date), pages.

11 How to create a footnote & shortened footnotes
Footnote # goes after “….” or after punctuation in paraphrased sentence. Click on “insert footnote” in references tab and it’ll automatically do it for you. Use a “shortened footnote” for refencing a source used previously. Format: Last name, abbreviated title, page number. Ibid., # means “in the same source.” Use when indicating the footnote directly above it. Consecutive references: When you are referencing the same source in two (or more) footnotes the second and subsequent references should be entered as "Ibid." and the page number for the relevant footnote. Use "Ibid." without any page number if the page is the same as the previous reference. Example footnotes: 1. Stephen Marshall, Cities, Design and Evolution (Abingdon, U.K.: Routledge, 2009), 69. 2. Ibid., 72. (Chicago Manual Referencing Guide)
