Bellringer: March 12 “I don't believe you would so quickly commend the policemen if you would observe their ugly and inhuman treatment of Negroes here in the city jail; if you would watch them push and curse old Negro women and young Negro girls; if you would see them slap and kick old Negro men and young boys; if you will observe them, as they did on two occasions, refuse to give us food because we wanted to sing our grace together.” (paragraph 41) What grammatical structure stands out in the above sentence? What emphasis is King creating in the sentence? Write your response on a piece of paper to turn in.
2
Discussion: How does King create his ethos for his intended audience? Why can he not rely on his credentials and leadership roles? How does King create a logical argument throughout his response? How does King use pathos effectively? (not too much, not too little)
3
Grammar work Find place in your essay where parallel structure would be particularly effective in making your point. Re-write the sentence so that it show parallel structure. Find two INDEPENDENT CLAUSES which are not currently joined by a Coordinating Conjunction. Re-write the sentences so that they are joined by a semi-colon. The sentences should be connected in thought so that joining them makes sense. Find a quotation which you have used to support your claim. Re-write the sentences before the quotation and after the quotations into one sentence with the quotation embedded into it.
4
Parallel Structure: “It gives the segregator a false sense of superiority and the segregated a false sense of inferiority.” Compare with: It gives the person who believes in segregation a false sense of superiority and the person who is segregated feels they are falsely inferior.
5
Using a Semi-colon to join two independent clauses
“Individuals may see the moral light and voluntarily give up their unjust posture; but, as Reinhold Niebuhr has reminded us, groups are more immoral than individuals.” Compare with: Individuals may see the moral light and voluntarily give up their unjust posture. As Reinhold Niebuhr has reminded us, groups are more immoral than individuals.

Using a quotation in context
Just as the eighth-century prophets left their little villages and carried their "thus saith the Lord" far beyond the boundaries of their hometowns; and just as the Apostle Paul left his little village of Tarsus and carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to practically every hamlet and city of the Greco-Roman world, I too am compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my particular hometown. (Compare with “the eighth-century prophets left their little villages. They carried their “thus saith the Lord” messages far beyond the boundaries of their hometowns. The Apostle Paul left his little village of Tarsus and carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to practically every hamlet and city of the Greco-Roman world. Just like them, I too am compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my particular hometown.) Which version gives a better sense of connection between King’s actions and those actions of the past?
