National Dementia Plan for Wales (NDPW)
Progress update
2
Context NDSE – England. Now delivered
Wales – dementia runs across a number of existing policies and other frameworks Need to make explicit plan for dementia in light of growth statistics.
3
Progress to date Planning group set up – last two meetings due in April Draft plan to be with the Minister by 30th April Detailed actions in all areas now in & ready for analysis and writing.
4
Why is it different to England (& Northern Ireland?)
In Wales – ‘No lack of strategy’ (Charles Twining 2008) Needs to be an Action Plan with achievable targets that can & will make a difference. Fits in a number of places – ‘Fulfilled Lives, Supportive Communities’
5
What will it say? 19 Objectives at present
Detailed actions to each objective Many actions achievable quickly, some will need time Some actions can be achieved through existing resource – some may need investment Significant differences to NDSE in key areas. NDPW will need to fit with other work in progress – the LCO in mental health as an example
6
(Some) key Objectives Public awareness & healthy living
Timely diagnosis & improving access to it Maximising community options for care Improving dementia care in DGH & specialist settings Improving workforce skills across dementia care Ensuring appropriate registration and regulation.
7
Next steps Group to complete work and draft plan to be submitted
Period of consultation will need to be defined Essential that service users and carers are consulted along with other stakeholders Implementation cannot be delayed too long – we need to get on with it
