While enterprises leverage almost 5 clouds (Rightscale) in today’s multi-cloud reality, few are achieving the speed and agility needed. Many are struggling to get the full value of moving to the cloud. Companies tend to fall into the trap of confusing simply moving IT systems to the cloud with the transformational strategy needed to get the full value of the cloud.  The key barriers to speed include:
Managing costs. The most cited challenge among mature cloud users is managing costs (Rightscale) By 2020, organizations that lack cost optimization processes will average 40% overspend in public cloud. (Predicts 2018: Gartner)
People and culture. The hardest part of digital transformation involves our people. McKinsey: 70% of digital transformation projects fail to achieve the intended benefits [1] due to “employee resistance to change” and “management behavior doesn’t always properly support the change”.
Skills gaps. Enterprises struggle with the complexity of operating multiple clouds and having the right skills, adding cost and risk. Maturity. Enterprises are at varying degrees and stages of cloud adoption and maturity. Analyst ESG reports that enterprises that have embarked on cloud transformation experience improved standing with exec leaders, app innovations happen faster, deliver cloud experience on-prem, improve public cloud resourcing as compared with enterprises that have not realized their cloud transformation.
