High and Low Tides We experience tides due to the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun. As Earth rotates, a coastal location will experience two high tides and two low tides daily. Tides will change about every 6 hours.
28
Tides
29
Spring and Neap Tides Spring Tides occur when the Earth, Moon and Sun are aligned. High tides are higher and low tides are lower than normal. (More extreme!) Occurs during Full and New moon phases Neap Tides occur when the Earth, Moon and Sun are at right angles to each other Tides don’t change as much throughout the day Occurs during 1st and 3rd Quarter moon phases

Earth’s Moon Lunar History
The most widely accepted model for the origin of the moon is that when the solar system was forming, a body the size of Mars impacted Earth. The resulting debris was ejected into space, began orbiting around Earth, and eventually united to form the moon.

The Sun-an average star
The Sun’s Energy The Sun-an average star • Nuclear fusion is the way that the sun produces energy. This reaction fuses small hydrogen atoms together to become a larger helium atom, releasing a tremendous amount of energy. • It is thought that a star the size of the sun can exist in its present stable state for 10 billion years. As the sun is already 4.5 billion years old, it is “middle-aged.”
