1
Unit 3 Vocab Organization for Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms
2
Carbon dioxide – waste product of cellular respiration; needed for photosynthesis
Oxygen- waste product of photosynthesis; needed for cellular respiration
3
Cellular respiration - the process by which cells use oxygen and glucose (nutrients) to produce energy (ATP) and releases CO2 and water Photosynthesis- the process by which plants make their own food using carbon dioxide, water and sunlight. Releases oxygen as a waste product and makes glucose for energy.
4
Chlorophyll – the green substance (pigment) contained in the chloroplast of plant leaves that absorbs energy from sunlight Chloroplast – a structure in a plant cell that contains chlorophyll; site of photosynthesis
5
Glucose – a sugar molecule; product of photosynthesis
6
Mitochondria- an organelle which takes in nutrients, breaks them down and creates energy (similar to the function of the digestive system). Also known as the powerhouse of the cell.
7
Consumers (heterotroph)- receive energy by consuming (eating) others
Producers (autotroph) – make their own food either by chemicals or the sun (i.e. plants)
8
Predator- organism that hunts/feeds on other organisms
Prey- organism that is hunted/eaten by other organisms
