1 World Federation of Engineering Organization WFEO
ENGINEERING CAPACITY BUILDING Presented By: Yashin Brijmohan Chair: Engineering Capacity Building Facilitated Workshop 04/04/2019

2 Human Capacity Building Context
It is estimated that some 2.5 million new engineers and technicians in sub-Saharan Africa – Sustainable Development Goals Lack of critical mass in Sub-saharan Africa 04/04/2019

3 Human Capacity Building Context
The majority of Infrastructure Development is forseen to happen in the African Continent Vision: At least 50% of infrastructure development should led and done by citizens of Africa 04/04/2019

4 Engineering Capacity Building Context
There is a strong relationship between a critical mass of educated and skilled engineering and science graduates and economic and social development Timing: preparing future skills by acting in the present Are we preparing adequately, and do we understand the changing context?

5 Global Urbanisation Today 3.5 billion people live in cities
By 2070 that number will double Double the energy demand 50% increase in transportation demand 75% of the world’s population will experience water shortages Significant pollution and climate change pressures

6 4th Industrial Revolution
Involves Big Data Artificial Intelligence Cybernetics Robotics

7 AI Vs Human Deep Blu Alpha Go 04/04/2019

8 Effects of the 4th Industrial Revolution
Shift from fossil fuels to sustainable energy Automated and autonomous transportation “Robotic” construction and production Internet of Things and the Internet of Everything Disruption of work and lifestyle Change is inevitable, not optional!

9 Are we stuck in this Paradigm?

10 Are we stuck in this Paradigm?

11 Changing Jobs

12 Changing Jobs

13 Effects of the 4th Industrial Revolution
It will affect: Business Societies Governments Professions

14 Human Capacity Building Context
Are we ready ? What if we don’t? Are our jobs taken already by Companies / Organisations beyond the continent? Is it too late? Is our Government ready to prioritise Engineering? Have we been able to move beyond the questions and debate into actions? 04/04/2019

18 AFRICA ENGINEERING WEEK
Week-long focus on engineering aims to educate the youth and the general public about the engineering profession, through strategic outreach activities in each country, such as educational workshops, public awareness events, mentoring activities and university events. The aim of these events is to show how engineers are key players in the solutions to important continental challenges, such the provision of clean drinking water, sustainable housing, and issues around climate change.

19 African Proverb If you want to go FAST Go Alone,
If you want to go FAR, Go Together 04/04/2019

20 Some Questions for You? Yes/No/I Don’t know
1) Are you ready to assist to build Capacity? 2) Are Engineers recognized and treated well enough in? 3) Do you believe that Government places enough effort on Engineering? 4) Do you believe that our Society places enough effort on Engineering? 5) Do you believe that the continent has the Leadership from Engineers to address these challenges? 6) What role do you believe that the Government should play in Engineering Capacity Building? 7) What can we do as the Engineering profession? 04/04/2019
