What is economics? Economics is the study of how consumers, producers, and the government make decisions in consuming, producing, and distributing goods and services.

Government person or group of people who rule a community, state, or nation.

Totalitarian A type of government where the government controls almost all aspects of the people’s lives.

Aristocracy A form of government where wealthy landowners hold control. Example: southern colonies

Dictatorship A type of government ruled by one person or a small group of people. These leaders often govern by military force.

Theocracy A type of government ruled by the values of a church of religion.

Direct Democracy Each citizen of a community cast their vote on an issue. Example: a town meeting.

Monarchy A type of government where the rulers come to power on the basis of family or heredity.

Representative Democracy
The people of North Carolina hold elections and choose officials to run the government on their behalf. Example: the Raleigh City Council.

Precedent Using decisions of former court cases to help a court make a decision in a current case.

Types of Government Absolute Monarchy: Government that is ruled by a king or a queen and leadership is passed down through bloodlines. There is no legislative branch. This type of monarchy is a form of dictatorship.

Types of Government Monarchy: Government that is ruled by a king or a queen and leadership is passed down through bloodlines. A monarchy will have a form of parliament ( law making body )

Types of Government Dictatorship: Government that is ruled by one person. This person can be elected ( unusual ) or someone who seizes power. There is no legislative branch.

Types of Government Totalitarian: Dictatorship that is ruled with an iron fist. There is no legislative branch. This form usually controls through force and fear.

Types of Government Oligarchy: Rule by a few people. Usually a council. There is no legislative branch.

Types of Government Direct Democracy: All citizens are part of the ruling process. They discuss and vote on the laws.

Types of Government Indirect Democracy: Citizens vote for the leaders of the country. The leaders have terms and will only serve through elections.
