2 Lesson Overview Learning Objective
Students will identify that the use of machines and other inventions has changed the way people live. Prior Knowledge No prior knowledge required for this lesson. Resources Required Student Handout 5.1 Student Handout 5.2 Scissors Glue sticks Teacher Dialogue Resource Special Instructions This lesson is an introduction to how traditional life for Aboriginal people living in Cape York has changed. The content of this lesson focusses on why the changes have occurred e.g. technological advances. While reference is made to traditional Cape York food, clothing, transport and communication, these will be developed further in subsequent lessons. Possible Ancestral Language Connection (ALC) Links To support this section of the unit it would be invaluable to set up a sharing table where students can be encouraged to bring in items from the past that they may have access to and could talk about and share. Community members and Elders may be able to help contribute to the table. It may be possible to loan items from the local Cultural Centre or take photos of items to display in the classroom. People have not always had these things. They were invented or created. They have changed the way people do things. Why do you think someone invented a fishing rod? 6 Concept Development The machines and inventions that have been developed over time have changed the way in which we live now, in the present, compared to before, in the past. Now, in the present, there are refrigerators. These are used to keep food items cool and fresh. Food can be frozen so it can be stored and used later. Now, in the present, there are local shops in Cape York where food items as well as other goods can be bought from. Now, in the present, planes and trucks are used to transport food and goods to and from Cape York. 6

7 Concept Development The machines and inventions that have been developed over time have changed the way in which we live now, in the present, compared to before, in the past. Now, in the present, there are cars to drive in to travel from place to place in Cape York. People use these to travel long and short distances. Now, in the present, there are boats with motors to travel long and short distances along the rivers that run through Cape York, and offshore on the sea. Now, in the present, there are planes to travel from place to place. These are usually used to travel long distances or to get to places that are not easy or quick to reach by car. 7

Now, in the present, there are some shops which sell clothes for people to buy. Now, in the present, there are sewing machines which people use to make items of clothing and other things such as curtains and sheets. Places called factories, have many of these so lots of clothes can be made quickly and all at once. Now, in the present, people can buy their clothes and other things by ordering them online – using the internet. If you bought something online you might see this symbol. Now, in the present, there are computers and phones which people can use to send s. This is like writing a letter but the person would get it straight away. Now, in the present, people can communicate with one another by writing letters or sending cards. Items of all different sizes can also be sent in packages through the mail. Now, in the present, there are phones which people can use to talk to one another or to send text messages. This allows people to talk to each other no matter where they are, as long as there is reception. 9

It is important to understand that changes are happening in our lives all the time. As new machines and ways of doing things are created, things in our life change. The things that are available to us change the way we do things and what we can do changes. The way Aboriginal people use to live in Cape York has changed a lot because of the things that have been created or invented over time. Maybe one day you might invent a new machine or way of doing something to change the way people live. 12
