1 Tools, Measurement, and Safety
8th Grade Science Chapter 1 Sec. 5

2 Objective Identify tools used to collect and analyze data Explain the importance of the International System of Units Identify the appropriate units to use for particular measurements Identify safety symbols

3 Meter Area Mass Volume Density Temperature
Vocabulary Meter Area Mass Volume Density Temperature

4 Tools for Measuring A Graduated Cylinder measures VOLUME A Thermometer measures TEMPERATURE A Meterstick measures LENGTH A Stopwatch measures TIME A Spring scale measures FORCE A Balance measures MASS

5 International System of Units
Length: meter (m) kilometer (km) decimeter (dm) centimeter (cm) millimeter (mm) micrometer(um) nanometer (nm)

6 Cubic meter (m3) Cubic centimeter (cm3) Liter (L) Milliliter (mL)
Volume Cubic meter (m3) Cubic centimeter (cm3) Liter (L) Milliliter (mL)

7 Mass and Temperature Temperature: Kelvin (K) Celsius (C) Mass: Kilogram (kg) gram (g) milligram (mg)

8 Area Area is a measure of how much surface an object has area = length x width * The units for area are square units* Km2 cm2 m2

9 Mass Mass is the amount of matter that something is made of * Kilogram is the basic SI unit for mass* Grams would be used to describe the mass of small objects

10 Volume Volume is the amount of space that something occupies, or in the case of a box, the amount of space something contains * The volume of a liquid is given in liters* The volume of a large, solid object is given in cubic meters To calculate the volume of a box shaped object multiply its length x width x height

11 Density is the amount of matter in a given volume
density= mass volume Density is expressed in grams per milliliter (g/mL) or grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3)

12 Temperature Temperature is the measure of how hot or cold something is Temperature can be measured in Celsius (C), Kelvins (K), or Fahrenheit (F)

13 What is the name of the SI unit used to measure length?
Assessment What is the name of the SI unit used to measure length? What is the formula for calculating density? The length multiplied by the width of a object is the density of the object. Agree or Disagree. Back your answer with evidence from the text. Identify the relationship between mass and density.
