During the Big Bible Story, kids will be asked to make a “Suspenseful Music” sound effect each time the devil enters the story. Help the kids decide ahead of time what sound to make. If they need help, you might want to suggest the classic “dun, dun, duuuuun” sound or possibly the “Imperial March” tune from “Star Wars” ™. Practice with them a few times to help them remember.

Hello everyone and welcome to another week of “Live Out Loud
Hello everyone and welcome to another week of “Live Out Loud.” Who can tell us what it means to “Live Out Loud”? (Take answers from kids.) Right! To “live out loud” means you live in a way that’s big and bold and pleasing to God, and that the people around you can’t help but notice
4
They hear your kind words, they see your loving actions, and they wonder who or what has made you so extraordinary. Have any of you “Lived Out Loud” lately? Tell us about it. (Take a few responses from kids.) Wow! I’m so proud of you! Today, we are going to discover another way we can “Live Out Loud” by looking at another true story from Jesus’ life.
5
Oh, and by the way, we’ll be getting a little loud during our story, too! We’ll be making sound effects! A sound effect is when you create a noise using your mouth, your body or something around you. Sound effects make great stories even better! So, are you ready? (Kids respond.) That was pretty good, but I think we should do it with a sound effect. If you’re ready, cluck like a chicken! (Kids cluck like chickens.) That’s more like it!

Tech Que: “The Big Bible Story” Graphic Last week, we talked about a really important thing that happened to Jesus involving water. Does anyone remember what it was? (Take answer.) That’s right—Jesus was baptized. Afterwards, God led Jesus into the desert. Deserts are hot. (Hold up “Sizzle” sign and prompt kids to make a “tsssss” sound.) Deserts are windy. (Hold up “Wind Blowing” sign and prompt kids to blow into their hands to make a wind sound.) More than anything else, though, deserts are DRY. If you were in the desert and didn’t have any water, what noise might you make? (Have kids make noises together.)
7
Jesus had been fasting in the desert for 40 days
Jesus had been fasting in the desert for 40 days! “Fasting” means that instead of eating, Jesus was spending time with His father, God. Imagine that, Jesus went 40 days without eating food! At the end of 40 days, Jesus was hungry! (Hold up “Stomach Growling” sign.)
8
It was right then that Satan came to Jesus
It was right then that Satan came to Jesus. (Hold up “Suspenseful Music” sign and prompt the kids to do their predetermined suspenseful sound. When finished, set down the sign and pick up a handful of rocks.) Satan said to Jesus, “If you’re the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
9
He knew Jesus was hungry and wanted Him to use His own power instead of trusting in God! Would Jesus give in? Drumroll, please! (Prompt kids to make a drumroll sound by patting their legs with their hands.) No way! Take a look at what the Bible says:
10
Tech Que: “Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘Man doesn’t live only on bread.’” Luke 4:4 Jesus said, “It is written…” Where do you think that was written? (Take answers.) That’s right! Jesus was able to say “no” to temptation by using a verse from the Bible! But Satan wasn’t finished.
11
(Hold up “Suspenseful Music” sign
(Hold up “Suspenseful Music” sign. When finished, stand on top of a chair or something else to represent the “high place.”) The devil took Jesus to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. Satan said that he would give Jesus all power over these kingdoms if only He would worship him. Did Jesus give in this time? Drumroll! (Prompt kids to do another drumroll.) No way! Look at what He said:
12
Tech Que: “Jesus answered, ‘It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God
Tech Que: “Jesus answered, ‘It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God. He is the only one you should serve.’” Luke 4:8 Once again, Jesus said no to sin by using a verse from the Bible! But, Satan still wasn’t done tempting Jesus. (Hold up “Suspenseful Music” sign. Step down from one chair and step onto another one to represent the highest point of the temple.
13
Next, Satan took Jesus to the highest point of the temple in Jerusalem
Next, Satan took Jesus to the highest point of the temple in Jerusalem. “If you are the Son of God,” Satan said, “Throw yourself down from here!” Then, Satan did something really sneaky. He quoted a Bible verse to try to get Jesus to do what he wanted! (Open your Bible to Luke 4:9-11 and read.) Satan said, “It is written: ‘The Lord will command his angels to take good care of you. They will lift you up in their hands.
14
Then you won’t trip over a stone
Then you won’t trip over a stone.’” Satan wanted Jesus to test God and see if God would save Him from falling. Satan was misusing the Bible, though. He was trying to make it mean something that it didn’t, and Jesus knew it. Look at how Jesus replied.
15
Tech Que: “Jesus answered, ‘Scripture says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left Jesus until a better time.’ Luke 4:12-13 Can you believe it!? (Step down from chair and hold up “Crowd Cheering” sign.) Jesus did it again! For the third time He said no to temptation by using a verse from the Bible. Satan knew He had been beaten and so he left Jesus alone.
16
Tech Que: “Live Out Loud” Title Graphic For Younger Kids: What did you find interesting about this story? What did Jesus do that helped Him say no to sin? After a few minutes, draw their attention back to the teaching area. You may want to ask the kids for some of their answers to hear what they were thinking.
17
In our story today, the devil tempted Jesus
In our story today, the devil tempted Jesus. Do you know what it means to be tempted? (Take answers.) Being tempted means that the devil is trying to convince you to do the wrong thing. Do you think it’s wrong to be tempted? (Take answers from kids.) It’s not wrong to be tempted. It’s only wrong when we give in to the temptation. The devil tempts everyone to sin. He even tempted Jesus to sin, but did Jesus give in to the temptation?
18
(Kids respond.) No way! When Jesus was tempted, He was able to say “no” every single time. This shows us three things about Jesus. First, because Jesus said no to sin, He’s fit to be our Savior. CG: Jesus is fit to be Savior. Only someone who is perfect is able to take the punishment for all the wrong things we’ve done. Second, because Jesus said no to sin, it shows that He really is the Son of God.
19
CG: Jesus is the Son of God
CG: Jesus is the Son of God. Only the Son of God could have the strength to say no to sin every single time! And third, because Jesus said no to sin, He’s an example to us. CG: Jesus is our example. We might not be able to live a sinless life, but if we follow Jesus’ example, we can say “no” to sin a lot more! Let me show you.

But when you are tempted, God will give you a way out so that you can stand up under it.” 1 Cor. 10:13 Does this mean we will always say no to sin? (Kids respond.) No, we’ll still mess up sometimes. That’s why we still need Jesus—our perfect Savior. But God is here to help us, and when we try to resist
