Lesson 6: Conversion Introduction to Science

3 What if I want to convert between units?
Dimensional analysis is a way to convert measurements between different units to help compare them.

4 Why do we need to convert?
Sometimes we aren’t able to make a measurement in the unit we need. In science, we use equations to solve problems. These equations only work when certain units are used. In your everyday life, you might need to convert between units. For example, you might travel to another country where they use a different system of measurement. In order to read signs that deal with measurement (like distance), you might want to convert them to units you are most familiar with.

7 #1 on student notes…go through with the students.
Once done, assign #2 then click next slide for answer.

8 Go over with the students.
Assign #3 before clicking the next slide – answer on next slide.

11 Precision vs. Accuracy Precision is the amount of detail in measurements, or how closely two or more measurements agree.

12 Precision vs. Accuracy Accuracy is how close a measurement is to the actual or accepted value for that measurement. Complete practice questions on student notes handout.
