2 HIV and AIDS Definition
HIV- Human Immunodeficiency Virus AIDS- Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome HIV/AIDS- breakdown of the immune system that attacks WBC’s and their disease fighting ability.

3 Virus What is a virus?- A virus is an exception to the cell theory because it lacks cell organelles like a nucleus- it needs a host cell to reproduce. How does a virus reproduce?- A virus reproduces by attaching itself to a specific host cell. The virus then injects its genetic material to make new viruses.

4 Where did it come from? HIV and AIDS originated from a type of chimpanzee in West Africa. These chimpanzees had an immunodeficiency virus that was most likely transmitted to humans when humans hunted the chimpanzees for their meat and came into contact with their infected blood. Over time, the virus spread throughout the world.

6 Where Was the First Recorded Case in the World? US?
The first recorded case of HIV in the United States was in San Francisco. A man named Ken Horne was diagnosed with AIDS on April 24 in the 1980’s. He was also suffering from Cryptococcus. The first ever case in the world was in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 1930’s.

About half of the people with HIV develop AIDS within 10 years. The time between infection with HIV and AIDS can vary greatly. 39 million people have died from HIV and AIDS worldwide.

70 million people have been infected with HIV worldwide. 658,507 people in the United States have died after being diagnosed with AIDS.

14 Conclusion HIV and AIDS are both horrific plagues. Over 70 million people worldwide have been diagnosed with this disease and over 600,000 have died from it JUST IN THE UNITED STATES! It has been around for many years and just continues to spread. HIV and AIDS are spread from the use of syringes, sharing needles, having unprotected sex, blood transfusions, etc. HIV and AIDS are such a horrible thing but we can prevent ourselves from getting these by being cautious about sharing things and being safe during sex. Be safe and don’t get HIV or AIDS!
