1
The Circulatory System
2
Introduction The circulatory system carries oxygen and food in the blood to the body cells and carries wastes away from the body cells. As your heart squeezes or pumps, it pushes blood through the blood vessels. This force on the inside of the vessel walls is called blood pressure.
3
Structure of the Circulatory System
Heart Blood Blood Vessels
4
Function of the Circulatory System
To transport food and oxygen to the body cells To transport carbon dioxide and wastes from the body cells.
5
Three Types of Circulation in Body
Coronary circulation- the flow of blood to and from the tissues of the heart. Pulmonary circulation- the flow of blood through the heart to the lungs and back to the heart. Systemic circulation- the largest of the types of circulations in which oxygen-rich blood flows to all the organs and body cells and back to the heart.
6
Types of Blood Vessels Artery- a blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart. Vein- a blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart. Capillary- small blood vessel that connects arteries and veins.
7
Common Diseases of the Circulatory System
Heart attack - A heart attack is when heart muscle dies from lack of oxygen because of a clogged vessel in the heart. Stroke - occurs when a vessel ruptures or leaks in the brain. Blood fills the area around the brain and puts pressure on the brain causing damage to other cells.
8
Parts of Blood Red blood cells – Carry oxygen
White blood cells – fight infection Platelets – Help blood clot Plasma – liquid part of blood, made of water and minerals
9
The Human Heart Four chambers: Right atrium Right ventricle
Left atrium Left ventricle
10
More About the Heart The heart is located behind your
breastbone, which is scientifically known as the“sternum”. The heart is the size of your fist. The heart pumps 70 mL of blood every time it beats An adult has about 5 liters of blood in their body
11
POP! Quiz What is name of the upper chambers of the heart?
Atria (atrium singular) Vein Arteries Ventricle
12
POP! Quiz What is the purpose of the Circulatory System?
To digest food To help develop your motor skills To transport food, oxygen and waste through the body To make you eat
13
POP! Quiz What makes up Blood? Plasma and water
White and Red blood cells Motor Oil White and Red blood cells, Plasma, and Platelets

Conclusion The circulatory, or cardiovascular, system is complex. Its structure consists of three parts; the heart, the blood and blood vessels. The function of the circulatory system is to carry oxygen and food to all body cells and to carry carbon dioxide and wastes away from the body cells.
