3.2 Water and Solutions I. Properties of Water A. Ice floats
1. prevents lakes/rivers from freezing solid. a. life exists under ice in water B. Water absorbs & retains heat well 1. absorbs lots of heat without changing temperature 2. Takes a long time to cool a. Keeps temps on Earth from changing too fast. 3. Helps organisms maintain a constant internal temp.
2
C. Cohesion – water sticking to water
1. ex- a glass of liquid just about to spill over.
3
D. Adhesion – water sticking to other polar substances.
1. ex.- milk sticking to the container when you pour it out
4
E. A combination of adhesion & cohesion
E. A combination of adhesion & cohesion causes water to move upward in plants II. Solutions A. Def- a mixture of one or more substances are evenly distributed in another substance. 1. looks the same throughout a. ex.- kool-aid
5
D. Acids and Bases 1. Acids – compounds that form extra hydronium ions. a. ex- stomach acid (HCl) 2. Bases – compounds that form extra hydroxide ions. a. ex- drano (NaOH) E. pH and Buffers 1. pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a solution is.
6
2. The pH scale is a scale of 0-14
a. 0-6 acidic solution b. 7 neutral c basic solution 3. a buffer is a substance that reacts to prevent pH changes in a solution. a. ex.- antacids (tums)
