Road Map for Success:
World War II at Home
Coupled with the radical changes abroad, World War II dramatically
changed the face of our nation as well. World War II virtually ended
the Great Depression due to the productive war-time economy. When
the American men went to war, the American women took their place
on the assembly line, the highway department and even the baseball
field while helping to keep America running. For the very first time,
women were given great responsibility outside of the home. African
Americans were also given responsibility they had not before been
granted at home and abroad.
Though much of the American landscape and culture changed for the
better, some of the effects that the war had on America crated a rift in
the melting pot. In fear of communists, foreign spies and saboteurs, the
American government created some special laws and provisions that
were actually unconstitutional, yet there were thought necessary to
ensure peace and tranquility at home.
