Allies: Americans against Japan

Why did they fight the battle?
Allies plan was to capture Iwo Jima in order to stop the bombing of their ships & to cut off the airfields being used by Japanese.

The small island of Iwo Jima Less than 5 miles from north to south & 2.5 miles at its widest point & .5 miles at its narrowest

Who won? The tiny island had taken America over one month to take

Why was this battle a turning point in the war?
the capture of Iwo Jima meant the battle for Okinawa, and the invasion of Japan itself, was not far off.

Pacific Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who said, "Among the Americans who served on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue." a decision that was to influence the use of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki was how far the Japanese would go to defend their country
