1 All of the symptoms are the result of nutrient deficiency.
What do all of the following have in common: tooth decay, allergies, headaches, indigestion, constipation, fatigue, unhealthy hair, unhealthy nails, dry skin, hyperactivity, low energy level, weight problems, eating disorders? Bell Ringer: Have students write in their journals everything they ate and drank the day before. Ask students to set those lists aside until the end of the power point. Have students write about, or ponder, their thoughts to this question. All of the symptoms are the result of nutrient deficiency.

2 WHY DO WE EAT? To sustain physical well-being or to keep us fit
To sustain energy To regulate body functions To sustain growth of body cells and tissues To alleviate hunger Ask questions, Why do we eat? Let students answer and then give them the ones you have come up with.

3 Nutrients: What are they?
A nutrient is a substance needed for the body to develop and function properly. There are many nutrients, but six are absolutely necessary. Have a volunteer read State: At their age (teen years) when they are growing fast (second to infants), changes in the body require good, balanced nutrition.

4 The Six Essential Nutrients
Introduce the topic for the day. Ask who knows what the six essential nutrients are.

5 Carbohydrates Vitamins Lipids Minerals Protein Water

6 Carbohydrates Simple and Complex Main energy source Fiber 4 kcal/gram
Most calories (45- 65%) should come from carbohydrates. Sources? After going over information on each slide, ask students to give examples of their favorite foods that are high in each nutrient. The following three all produce energy. They are known as the “Go” nutrients. These next 3 are “body regulators.”

7 Protein Amino acids Complete and Incomplete
Used for a variety of factors in our bodies 4 kcal/gram 10-35% of calories should come from protein Sources? Protein

8 Lipids Saturated and Unsaturated
An important role in a healthy diet for many reasons.  9 kcal/gram No more than % of calories should come from fat Sources?

9 Vitamins 12 essential vitamins Fat soluble & Water Soluble 0 kcal/gram
only needed in small amounts but essential Recommendations fluctuate Sources? Vitamins Who can name all of the vitamins?

10 Minerals Major minerals, trace minerals, electrolytes
Amount needed varies depending on mineral Minerals help your body grow, develop, and stay healthy. 0 kcal/gram Sources?

11 Water Most VITAL nutrient Body weight is 60- 70% water.
Only go 5-7 days without water Necessary for many reasons Recommended that adults drink 8 glasses of fluid daily. Sources? Water

12 How much should you drink?
Formula • Step 1: Your weight divided by 2 = The number of ounces of water you need each day. • Step 2: Divide the ounces you need by 8 = The number of cups of water you need each day Have students calculate how much they should drink. Have students refer back to their motivator from the beginning of class. (List of what they consumed the day before.) Have students determine if all nutrients were met, and add in those that are needed somewhere throughout their food intake for that day.
