Is It Ever Okay to Lie? The Old Testament often lacks moral commentary Record of historical events Example: Esau despising his birthright Not a moral issue until the New Testament Sometimes the OT comments by consequences A law of consequences – Romans 2:14, 8:2 We did not become aware of the moral implication of Esau’s action until it is clearly stated in Hebrews 12. Heb 12:16 that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. Ro 2:14 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves,

Heb 12:16 that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. The Blessing Was Not Esau’s
(Esau) said, "Is he not rightly named Jacob, for he has supplanted me these two times? He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.“ Genesis 27:36 WRONG! We did not become aware of the moral implication of Esau’s action until it is clearly stated in Hebrews 12. Heb 12:16 that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. Ro 2:14 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves,

The Blessing Was Not Esau’s
….be no immoral or godless person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears Hebrews 12:16-17 Esau lost the blessing with the birthright. HE was responsible for what happened before God

The Great Blessing Genesis 27:28-29 (JACOB) Now may God give you of the dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth, and an abundance of grain and new wine; may peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you; be master of your brothers, and may your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be those who curse you, and blessed be those who bless you." Genesis 12:2-3 (ABRAHAM) And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing; and I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed."

Genesis 49:8-10 (JUDAH) Judah, your brothers shall praise you; Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; Your father's sons shall bow down to you. Judah is a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He couches, he lies down as a lion, and as a lion, who dares rouse him up? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.

Understanding Jacob God did not condone Jacob’s lying God despised lying from the beginning (Jn 8:44) God DID approve of his desires God overlooked the flaws of men David, Moses, Samuel, Hezekiah, Josiah, etc. FAITH is the credit of righteousness – Romans 4:3 None are righteous
27
