It’s called the ROSE strategy
Let me prove to you that it can work … and in just 11 minutes you can write an essay.
13
Get ready … Turn to a new sheet in your composition book …
14
The 11-minute Essay, Step 1 Opinion Statement:
“I always find beauty in the things that are odd and imperfect – they are much more interesting.” ~ Marc Jacobs
15
The 11-minute Essay, Step 1 Prompt:
Write an essay explaining whether or not beauty is important.
16
The 11-minute Essay, Step 1 Instructions: Look at the photo. In the next MINUTE, copy the question. Prompt: Is beauty important or not?
17
The 11-minute Essay, Step 2 Instructions:
For the next THREE (3) MINUTES, answer the question. Explain the statement and its validity. (What does it mean? What is your interpretation of it? How true is it?) You have developed a controlling idea.
18
The 11-minute Essay, Step 3 Instructions:
Take a breath … start a new paragraph and indent. For the next THREE (3) MINUTES, tell how your controlling idea connects to any literature you have read.
19
The 11-minute Essay, Step 4 Instructions:
Take a breath … start another paragraph and indent. (push right) For the next THREE (3) MINUTES, tell how your controlling idea connects to any movie you have seen that also proves the idea to be true. Use the name of the movie as you write about it.
20
The 11-minute Essay, Step 4 Instructions:
Take another breath … start another paragraph and indent again. For the next THREE (3) MINUTES, tell how tell how your controlling idea connects to your own life, your experiences, and/or our world.
21
The 11-minute Essay, Step 5 Instructions: Take a breath and indent one more time. For the next MINUTE, complete your essay by reflecting on something that this discussion leaves you wondering.
22
Now that you’re done … Instructions: In just a minute you will be dividing into groups of 3-4. Here is what you will do: each member will read his/her 11-minute essay twice. After the second time, the other members of the group will write down (in their composition books) metaphors for which the writing reminds you.
23
Now … divide yourselves
Say what?? In other words: Does the writing remind you of a particular song, sound, type of weather, motion or locomotion, color, shape, food, animal, instrument, car, or even clothing? Explain why it does. Now … divide yourselves into groups of 3-4
