AP Literature Exam Review
Literary Terms
2
The heart of the matter…
Almost every question or prompt in the AP exam will expect two things of you: an extensive and detailed knowledge of Literary Terms and the ability to comprehend literature on a college level. Tonight we will focus on the former.
3
What are literary terms?
This is a generic term for all vocabulary surrounding prose and poetry. Just as a biology exam would expect you to know specific vocabulary, the Literature exam expects you to know most of these terms.

What you need: A complete knowledge of the terms present in all literature and the ability to label and discuss those terms in a variety of literature. An intimate knowledge of at least 8-10 devices in order to apply them to literature in the essays. A working knowledge of somewhere around 20 devices so that you are not caught off guard in the multiple choice section of the exam.
8
Suggestions for studying:
Create a list of devices and your own definitions for them (based on the real definitions). Find difficult pieces of literature and practice labeling all of the 10 terms that are always in literature and 8 additional terms that you choose as your favorites. Repeat…repeat…repeat
