1. What was the Continental Congress?
*The Colonies needed to act together, so in September 1774, they sent 55 delegates to Philadelphia from 12 colonies (no GA) The delegates included well-known names such as John Adams, Patrick Henry, and George Washington. The Continental Congress called for: a. All 13 acts to be repealed because they violated the colonists’ rights. b. Boycott of ALL English goods/trade c. Okayed the Suffolk Resolves: people should arm themselves against the British (militias)

*April 1775: British troops sent to take militia’s arms and arrest colonial leaders *April 19: Paul Revere and Richard Dawes ride through the night to warn colonists “Shot heard round the world” Battles at Lexington and Concord: colonists haunt British all the way back to Boston, picking soldiers off along the way

3. How did the Colonies declare independence?
Second Continental Congress send once last petition to Britain asking for the King to protect their rights: Olive Branch Petition: rejected Thomas Jefferson was selected to write a Declaration of Independence. He took the ideas of John Locke and wrote about rights that the government should protect. Formally approved on July 4, Britain and the new United States go to war.
