EARLY SETTLEMENTS IN NORTH AMERICA
Sir Walter Raleigh sent 100 soldiers on the first trip. John White was captain of the second attempt to settle in Roanoke. English Merchants wanting to try again to start a colony. Looking for gold and other riches. Pilgrims from England.

English rulers wanted their own colonies in America for the raw materials.
England did not want Spain to have all of the power. Merchants from England wanted o find gold and to get rich. They wanted to build a society where everyone shared the same religious beliefs. 1584, on Roanoke Island on the coast of what is now North Carolina. 1607, by Chesapeake bay on the James river in Virginia. 1620, Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Sir Walter Raleigh set up the first group of men to settle on Roanoke.
Capt. John White left to get supplies and returned 3 years later to no one. Capt. John Smith – leader of Jamestown. Stated, “you don’t work, you don’t eat. Pocahontas – helped bring peace between colonists and native Americans. John Rolfe – brought tobacco plants to the colony. William Bradford – Plymouth’s governor for 30 years. Helped write the Mayflower Compact. Squanto – showed pilgrims how to live from the land. Colony disappeared without a trace. White was delayed because of the war between England and Spain. Settled in a swampy area , did not plant food and ½ of the men died the first year. Eventually went to war with the Powhatan tribe Landed too late to plant crops. When colony began to grow, some colonists did not want to cooperate with Native Americans and the trade stopped between the two groups.. War broke out between Pilgrims and Native Americans.
