4 HIV Definition The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus (a subgroup of retrovirus) that causes HIV infection and over time acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

6 HIV Structure HIV is a round, ball-shaped virus. It has two single strands of RNA for its genome. The RNA is used to carry the genetic information that is passed on when new HIV particles are produced. The outermost layer of the HIV particle is the envelope

9 HIV History A type of chimpanzee in West Africa is the source of HIV infection in humans. The chimpanzee version of the immunodeficiency virus was transmitted to humans and mutated into HIV when humans hunted these chimpanzees. Over decades, the virus slowly spread across Africa and later into other parts of the world.

10 HIV History The earliest known case of infection with HIV-1 in a human was detected in a blood sample collected in 1959 from a man in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. (How he became infected is not known.) Genetic analysis of this blood sample suggested that HIV-1 may have stemmed from a single virus in the late 1940s or early 1950s.

12 HIV life cycle The seven stages of the HIV life cycle are: 1) binding 2) fusion 3) reverse transcription 4) integration 5) replication 6) assembly 7) budding

15 HIV Transmission HIV transmission can occur by : HIV Sexually Transmission HIV Non-sexual Transmission

16 HIV Sexually Transmission
HIV sexually transmission infection occurs by : Contact with pre-ejaculate  Contact with semen   Contact with vaginal fluids

17 HIV Non-sexual Transmission
Non-sexual transmission can occur by : Transfer of blood From an infected mother to her infant through breast milk An HIV-positive mother can transmit HIV to her baby both during pregnancy and childbirth

20 AIDS (HIV Infection) AIDS is a condition in humans in which progressive failure of the immune system allows life-threatening opportunistic infections and cancers to thrive. Without treatment, average survival time after infection with HIV is estimated to be 9 to 11 years, depending on the HIV subtype

22 AIDS Symptoms There are many AIDS symptoms and these include :
Being tired all of the time Swollen lymph nodes in neck or groin Fever that lasts for more than 10 days Unexplained weight loss Yeast infections in  mouth, throat, or vagina Severe, long-lasting diarrhea Unexplained bleeding
