Supernova Classification
The classification of supernovae is based almost entirely on peak visible-light spectra. This classification method was first proposed by Minkowski (1941; Type I/Type II) and developed since. Filippenko (1997) provided the classical review of this subject. The chapter “observational and physical classification of supernovae” in the “SN Handbook” (Gal-Yam 2016) provides a modern reference.
