2 Background information
Western countries wanted to stop communist expansion Joined alliances to protect themselves from any future aggression NATO (formed in 1949) is an alliance between U.S., Canada, Turkey and 25 European counties.  They work by pledging every member to defend any member that is being attacked Soviet Union has a very strong military in Europe The Soviet Union responded to NATO by creating a Warsaw pact after World War II. The struggle between these two alliances defined most of the cold war in Europe.

3 Timeline February 4, Yalta Conference: divide Germany and Berlin into occupational zones, Poland's government was reorganized, Soviet Union agreed to join the United Nations March 4, 1947 – Britain and France signed the Treaty of Dunkirk,a military alliance March 17, 1948 – Treaty of Dunkirk that extended to Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands, known as Treaty of Brussels June 24, 1948 – Soviet Union created Berlin Wall, prevented allies to access Berlin September 28, 1948 – Western Union Defense Organization was formed by the countries of the Treaty of Brussels April 4, 1949 – North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created, included many countries from the previous treaties,prtoect countries from Soviet Union  May 12, 1949 – Soviet Union lifts blockade from Berlin May 23, 1949 – Federal Republic of Germany was established,East and West came together October 22, 1951 – Many other countries joined NATO, Greece and Turkey May 14, 1955 – Warsaw Pact was another alliance for the Soviets and many eastern European countries, negotiate with NATO as an equal partner

There is a split down the middle with the different countries flags. What is the title or caption? There is none. Observe its Parts Visuals - The 3 flags (U.S. Britain and Soviet Union,) Crack down the center of the Earth. Try to Make Sense of it Visuals – The flags represent a symbol for each of the countries and their roles in the Division of Europe.  They stand for the United States, Britain, and Soviet Union. What is the message? The message is that Britain and U.S. were against the Soviet Union and it show how things were divided from both point of views. Who drew this cartoon? Harry S.
