PLAGIARISM & HARVARD REFERENCING
RACHEL CHÁVEZ JUNE 2017 Plagiarism and how to avoid it How the Harvard & footnote referencing systems work Books, journal articles and websites
2
Three Steps to Avoiding Plagiarism
1. Use quotation marks when copying directly from the source. 2. Use your own words and sentence structure when paraphrasing/summarising. 3. Include references in each situation acknowledging your source. Q. Do I have to give references for things I already know? Q. All my research will be new to me. Does that mean I have to reference everything? My assignment will just be a list of references! Q. Which is best – quoting or paraphrasing/summarising? How the Harvard and Footnote Referencing Systems Work
Both systems have two parts to referencing: Bibliography / List of References Gives the full details of each source you used, e.g. Royal College of Nursing (2017) Become a nurse. Available at: (Accessed: 15 June 2017). In-Text References OR Footnotes Briefly identify your sources in the text of your assignment, e.g. ‘All registered nurses must choose from one of four specialisms as part of their nursing degree – adult nursing, children’s nursing, mental health nursing or learning disability nursing.’ (Royal College of Nursing, 2016) OR 1 How the Harvard and Footnote Referencing Systems Work PLAGIARISM & HARVARD REFERENCING RACHEL CHÁVEZ JUNE 2017

Check which referencing style you are required to use and be consistent. Make a note of everything you need when you have the source in front of you. Check your references just as you would your spelling. Materials, such as handouts/presentation, etc. are available in the Library and on the Student Portal. Rachel can go through referencing again with you, give you templates or check your references. Points to Remember PLAGIARISM & HARVARD REFERENCING RACHEL CHÁVEZ JUNE 2017
