Presentation on theme: "Power Power is the amount of work applied over a period of time"— Presentation transcript:

1 Power Power is the amount of work applied over a period of time
As such… P = W/t (Power = Work / time) Units of power are Watts where 1 Watt = 1 N·m/s (Newton-meter/second) OR 1 J/s (joule/sec)

2 Power Kilowatt-hour (kW) is commonly used by electrical power companies It is not really power, but energy consumed. See below: 1 kW = 1000 W 1 h = 3600 s 1 kWh = 1000 J/s × 3600 s = J

3 Power A 100 Watt bulb uses 100 Watts of energy in 1 hr. The more Watts the bulb, the brighter it will be.

4 Power Running up stairs means t is small, so P is big
Walking up stairs means t is big, so P is small One horsepower is 746 W

5 Power Practice Problems
1. A squirrel (mass of approximately 1 kg) does push-ups by applying a force to elevate itself by 0.05 m in order to do a mere 0.50 Joule of work. If the squirrel does this in 2 seconds, then determine its power. 2. When doing a chin-up, a physics student lifts her 42.0-kg body a distance of 0.25 meters in 2 seconds. What is the power delivered by the student's biceps?
