Bridges to learning leadership academy
Summer Adventures in Learning (SAIL) Program at Providence Elementary School, Summer 2018
2
What is “sail” A Summer Program designed to prevent summer learning loss. In 2012, a group of area Birmingham funders joined forces to address the challenge of summer learning loss and created a partnership called SAIL (Summer Adventures in Learning). The goal of the collaborative was to create a simpler, more centralized process to provide grants to local summer enrichment programs. The Community Foundation of Birmingham found that summer learning loss contributes to the achievement gap between low-income students and their higher income peers. While all children lose up to two months of math skills during summer vacation, low-income students are at risk of losing an additional two months in reading achievement. The SAIL Partnership model meets regularly to determine the best way to strengthen summer programs. The focus is to provide programs throughout the summer months where students can explore new interests and skills as well as gain the support they need to prevent summer learning loss.

“SAIL” For Madison county area schools
Huntsville City Schools, Madison County Schools, Madison City Schools and the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville and The Schools Foundation have developed a partnership to provide summer programs modeled after the Birmingham initiative. In 2017 the Community Foundation secured funders who granted monies for sites in Madison County, Madison City, and Huntsville City (Village of Promise). For Summer 2018, Huntsville City Schools, directly, has been awarded a grant in the amount of $30,000 for a program to be held at Providence Elementary School. Additionally, Huntsville City Schools’ students will not only have an opportunity to participate in a SAIL Program at Providence but also students who attend Williams P8 through The Boys and Girls Club of North Alabama and/or participate in the Village of Promise program.
