Basic Sentence Structure
All sentences must have…. 1- a subject (who or what is being discussed). 2- a predicate /pred-i-kit/ (has a verb and gives information about the subject). 3- a complete thought or give a message. Five boats crossed the river. complete thought Subject Predicate a sentence

Analyze- Put a wavy line under the subject and a straight line under the predicate.

Basic Sentence Patterns
• Natural order The five boats sailed gracefully across the water. • Gracefully across the water sailed the five boats . • Mixed Order Gracefully across the water the five boats sailed. Reversed Order The predicate is divided

Questions are formed by changing the sentence pattern.

These sentences are missing a subject and a predicate!
Normally these kinds of fragments are beside a complete sentence. You can fix them by attaching the word group to the sentence it describes. In the middle of the night. The telephone rang. In the middle of the night the telephone rang. We walked. Across the street. We walked across the street.

These fragments do not form a complete thought.
