1 Notes 1.3 – Motion: Speed & Velocity September 8th & 9th

2 DO NOW QUESTION: Lightning McQueen travels 200 miles in 2 hours
DO NOW QUESTION: Lightning McQueen travels 200 miles in 2 hours. How fast is he moving?

3 Objective Students will be able to (SWBAT) distinguish between speed and velocity.

4 What is motion? Motion is a change in position over time.
Can we measure your motion if you are sitting in a chair? Yes – You do not move, so 0m, but time does pass. Let say 60 seconds. 0m/60s = 0m/s no moving

5 Calculating Motion You need to know two things:
the distance traveled by the object b) the time it took to travel that distance.

6 Why is that v not s?

7 V stands for Velocity (but we use it for speed too)
Scalar Only tell us how fast – this is called the magnitude (number amount) Velocity Vector Tell us how fast – this is called the magnitude (number amount) Tells us the direction (+ or – for forwards or backwards)

8 V D = distance ( usually meters, m) T = time (usually seconds, s)
S or V = speed or velocity ( usually meters per second, m/s) Rule: If variables are next to each other, you multiply. If not, you divide TOP number / BOTTOM number. Not using algebra V
