Quick Notes about Natural Selection
Four ways natural selection can act on a population 1. Stabilizing Selection where the average phenotype is selected for
5
Quick Notes about Natural Selection
Four ways natural selection can act on a population Directional Selection where one of the extremes in phenotype is selected for
6
Quick Notes about Natural Selection
Four ways natural selection can act on a population Disruptive/Diversifying Selection where both of the extremes in phenotype is selected for
7
Quick Notes about Natural Selection
Four ways natural selection can act on a population Sexual Selection- Based on the ability to attract a mate. Usually males and females differ a lot. Ex: Peacocks.

I. Natural Selection causes populations to evolve
There are other mechanisms that cause evolution: II. Mutation III. Gene Flow (immigration, emigration) IV. Recombination of chromosomes during gamete formation AND V. Genetic Drift – which are just chance events. Bad luck not bad genes! Examples: A. Founder effect – where a small segment of a population is displaced to a new area B. Bottleneck effect- a natural disaster leaves a few survivors (hurricane, fire, tornado, flood, etc)

Today’s Objective: Objective:
To Review Evolution by analyzing a Bill Nye clip. If time remains, to recognize and calculate the frequency of alleles in a population over time to determine if evolution is occurring
11
Greatest Discoveries with Bill Nye “The Origin and Evolution of Life”
Complete the handout as we watch
12
Hardy- Weinberg ppt – If time remains today
Just listen….no fill in the blank notes for this
13
Hardy – Weinberg The Equations:
To calculate allele frequency use p + q = 1 To calculate genotypic frequency use the top equation Round to the nearest tenth P = dominant allele frequency q = recessive allele frequency p2 = homozygous dominant frequency Q2 = homozygous recessive frequency 2pq = heterozygous frequency
16
Hardy-Weinberg Practice
Handout you picked up at the door. Work in your assigned groups to complete the rest of the problems. SKIP SAMPLE 3
17
EXIT TICKET Please define evolution and give an example?
Please explain microevolution and give an example Please describe speciation and give one way it can occur. Please compare and contrast natural and artificial selection
