ADDIE is… …a systematic instructional design model consisting of five phases: Analysis Development Design Evaluation Implementation Ask learners: have you ever heard of ADDIE before? Where? In what context? 4/4/2019 Copyright © Media

What’s an Instructional Design Model?
Analysis Development Evaluation Design Implementation An instructional design model is a framework for creating and delivering - learning experiences, training materials, skills development, and other forms of knowledge transfer - in the most efficient, effective, and appealing way possible. There are many different instructional design models. ADDIE is very popular because it is easy to use, easy to remember, and very effective. Initiate a discussion of instructional design history Military origins Development as a career in its own right Impact on organizations Provide arguments supporting ADDIE as the best all-around instructional design model for most applications. Other models are too academic and difficult to implement ADDIE’s proven track record 4/4/2019 Copyright © Media

The Analysis Phase ANALYSIS =
The most important phase, but often neglected Errors in analysis tend to be catastrophic A thorough analysis, executed correctly, is never a waste of time ANALYSIS = Things that can go wrong with a bad or nonexistent analysis: Wrong subject matter Wrong approach for a specific audience Wasting time (back-tracking) Running out of time Running over-budget Disorganization and chaos Time spent in the analysis phase saves time in later phases Anecdotes about bad analysis: Training too basic – audience already knows the material trained Objectives too ambitious – not enough time or money 4/4/2019 Copyright © Media

The Analysis Phase Assess training needs Quantify training parameters
Identify gaps in current knowledge/skills Who are the learners? Quantify training parameters Time Budget Resources (LMS, SMEs, training rooms, instructional designer availability) Pre-assessment of learners Identify current levels of knowledge to build upon What delivery methods will work best? 4/4/2019 Copyright © Media

8
The Design Phase Key Design Task: Develop Robust Learning Objectives
Identify desired behavioral outcomes Performance-based What will learners be able to do that they couldn’t do before? Observable and/or quantifiable 4/4/2019 Copyright © Media
9
The Design Phase Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
Make initial contacts – obtain commitments Be courteous with their time Be honest about how much time will be required Schedule interviews and content reviews Make sure SMEs have the schedule, too Provide reminders – be prepared for no-shows Conduct interviews Mind-mapping techniques Obtain content reviews Implement needed revisions 4/4/2019 Copyright © Media

The Design Phase Pre-production planning Brainstorming

The Development Phase Create the content Create assessments Write
Author Code Shoot Record Etc. Create assessments 4/4/2019 Copyright © Media

The Development Phase Review the content Revise as necessary
SME review User acceptance testing Copy editing Fact checking Revise as necessary Finishing touches Bug fixes Final revisions 4/4/2019 Copyright © Media

The Implementation Phase

The Implementation Phase
Deliver the training content Conduct face-to-face training Deploy online assets Upload/schedule in LMS Webinar tips: It’s a live performance – rehearse! Thoroughly test equipment (microphones etc.) 4/4/2019 Copyright © Media

The Evaluation Phase 4/4/2019 Copyright © Media
17
The Evaluation Phase How did we do? How can we do better?
Formative evaluation – evaluation that occurs throughout the ADDIE process, at each step along the way Summative evaluation – a final evaluation of the entire process Collate/quantify learner feedback Pay attention to oft-repeated observations Compare pre- and post-assessment results 4/4/2019 Copyright © Media
