3 Field Definitions of The Rate Calculator
1 3 2 4 5 6 7 Description of each field/option: 1. Shipment Type – identifies the party responsible for the freight payment: Prepaid: the shipper is responsible Collect: the consignee is responsible 2. C.O.D (cash on delivery) – a type of transaction in which the goods are paid for at the time of delivery. Only available for collect shipments. If payment is not received when the goods are delivered - the goods will be returned to the seller. 3. Declared Value – The value of the shipment as declared by the shipper. The 2 radio buttons allow users to define the currency (whether the declared value is stated in Canadian or US currency.) The declared value cannot be more than $10/pound and surcharges apply if the stated value is more than $2/pound. 4. Origin/Destination City/Zip – defines where the shipment is going to and from, the system will automatically fill in the Province after indicating the Origin/Destination City/Zip. If more than one province exists for the City entered (and the automatic fill in is incorrect) select the corresponding Province from the drop down. *Rates are not generated for shipments going to and from the United States.    5. Type of Service Regular Service – regular intermodal shipping service. Maximum Expedited Service – premium shipping service offered by Vitran Express -deliveries between Central Canada and the Western provinces are completed in the least possible transit time. *Expedited service only available for specific locations, rate quote would be generated for regular service. 6. Linear Feet – also referred to as “Linear Foot-loads” they are special arrangements that use a portion of the trailer. The minimum measurement for these loads is 10 linear feet. 7. Your shipment’s freight class determines the shipping charges. There are 19 freight classes ranging from class 50 (least expensive) to class 500 (most expensive). The class of your shipment is determined by its contents and the NMFC item number. You are only required to state the class when making cross border shipments. *Net Rates (My Rate Calculator/Rate Quote with Account): user not required to enter freight class. Piece Count - shipment measured in terms of skids, pieces or cartons. When making a total shipment of more than 6 skids, an error message will appear after the user clicks the compute button. The system will inform the user to enter the shipment's information in terms of linear feet. *Limitation only applied on domestic shipments.
