2 TYPES OF ESSAY QUESTIONS

3 TYPES OF ESSAY QUESTIONS Knowing what you are being asked to answer in a question helps you to model your response. CHANGE: Here you are being asked to show how something has changed. While this is a comparison question, you are to describe a change. Reflect on how things were and how and why they have changed. You must include evidence, explain the significance of your evidence and how it supports your claim. COMPARISON: Here you are being asked to make a comparison. Compare people, ideas, events, environments, interactions or whatever the question is asking. Be certain to provide evidence, its significance and explain how your evidence supports your claim. DESCRIPTION: Here you are being asked to describe something or things. You are to provide facts, describe each fact in detail and its overall relevance to the topic you have been asked to discuss. CONNECTION: This is generally an “educated opinion” question. You are connecting what you have learned in the chapter and evaluating it. Remember to back your opinion with solid evidence and to explain how you made that “connection”. Note that your Margin Question + Big Picture question types are the same!

4 HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS, RUBRICS + FORMATS
ALL ESSAY-TYPE HW SHOULD BE TYPED AND SAVED TO YOUR HOME COMPUTER OR SAVED TO A SECURE SAVING DEVICE. IT SHOULD ALSO BE PRINTED OUT AND PLACED IN YOUR HOMEWORK FOLDER. Students are responsible for keeping copies of all work. WORK THAT IS TO BE SUBMITTED TO TURN IT IN WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN CLASS OR PRINTED ON THE HW SHEET. IF YOU ARE NOT CERTAIN, YOU CAN ALWAYS CHECK TO SEE IF YOU NEED TO SUBMIT IT BY GOING TO THE TURNIT IN PAGE.

5 MARGIN QUESTIONS/SHORT ESSAY PARAGRAPHS— Top Margin Question score is generally 60 points + 5 points rigor = 65 points An effective paragraph has three parts: claim, evidence, and analysis. The below format is a body paragraph organizer that all students must follow : 1st Provide an outline of your short essay by identifying each of the 3 points below: MARGIN QUESTION TYPE + QUESTION: Identify the type of question you are being asked to answer, the margin question and it’s page number. (NOTE: Finding the question type is easy because your text book provides it in front of the margin question! (10 points) EVIDENCE: provide evidence—evidence is brief and specific. It’s a solid fact or an example. REMEMBER: The more evidence you gather, the stronger your essay will be. (10 points) CLAIM—This is also sometimes called a topic sentence. This will be your way of announcing the main focus of your paragraph; it should tell the reader what your paragraph will be about. (10 points) 2nd Write your short essay: SHORT ESSAY ANSWER: Bullets 1, 2 and 3 above act as your paragraph outline; there you define the direction of your brief essay and the evidence you intend to use to support your paragraph’s claim. Now it’s time to write your essay. Begin with your claim. Next, you should analyze each piece of evidence to show how it supports your first sentence/claim. When done sum up your message with a final sentence (“a link”) that concludes your brief essay. (30 points) EXAMPLE HEADINGS: At the top of each assignment include your heading—your full name, period you have AP World, Chapter # (-5 if not included) MARGIN: QUESTION TYPE + QUESTION: CHANGE (p. 51): What accounts for the emergence of agriculture after countless millennia of human life without it? EVIDENCE: E1 End of Ice Age (16,000 years ago) E2 Global Warming E3 Megafaunal extinction CLAIM: The end of the last Ice Age brought about change to the world’s environment and to life forms. SHORT ESSAY: The end of the last Ice Age brought about change to the world’s environment and to life forms. Global warming made agriculture possible. The warmer, wetter, and more stable climate conditions permitted the flourishing of more wild plants, especially cereal grasses, which humans would come to rely on. At the same time, magafaunal extinction—the dying out of a number of large animal species—took place. Paleolithic people needed to seek new sources of food. Thus, the combination of global warming, animal extinction and the human need to survive inspired the emergence of agriculture. DON’T FORGET TO INCLUDE YOUR CLOSING “LINK”! Note that the last sentence is this the link which sums up the short essay.

6 BIG PICTURE HOMEWORK (scores generally: 60 points + 5 points rigor)
EACH BIG PICTURE QUESTION IS A BRIEF ONE – TWO PARAGRAPH ESSAY. TO EARN A PERFECT SCORE ON EACH BIG PICTURE QUESTION, YOU MUST: TYPE OF QUESTION + QUESTION: Identify the type of question you’re being asked to answer. This is important because knowing what you are being asked helps to inform your response. (10 points) EVIDENCE: provide evidence—evidence is brief and specific. It’s a solid fact or an example. REMEMBER: The more evidence you gather, the stronger your essay will be. (10 points) CLAIM: Each paragraph should begin with a claim (a.k.a. topic sentence). Remember your claim identifies the topic you wish to cover in your paragraph. (10 points) SHORT ESSAY: Bullets 1, 2 and 3 above act as your paragraph outline. In this outline you’ve defined the direction of your brief essay and the evidence you intend to use to support your paragraph’s claim. Now it’s time to write your essay. Begin with your claim. Next, you should analyze each piece of evidence to show how it supports your first sentence/claim. When done sum up your message with a final sentence (“a link”) that concludes your brief essay. If you are writing more than a one paragraph response, you should follow the same format: claim, + evidence + analysis + link. (30 points) EXAMPLE HEADINGS: At the top of each assignment include your heading—your full name, period you have AP World, Chapter # (-5 if not included) Q. TYPE + QUESTION: CONNECTION: What is the significance of the Paleolithic era in world history? (P. 33) EVIDENCE: E1—initiated technologies--hand axe, Clovis point E2—spirituality—Venus figurines, Paleolithic rock art E3—adapted to environment– “settling down” and migrations from Africa, Jomon of Japan. CLAIM: During the Paleolithic era, humans created a way of life that has sustained humankind over 95% of the time that our species has inhabited the earth. In fact, the Paleolithic lifestyle was not challenged by alternatives until 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. SHORT ESSAY: During the Paleolithic era, humans created a way of life that has sustained humankind over 95% of the time that our species has inhabited the earth. In fact, the Paleolithic lifestyle was not challenged by alternatives until 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. Humans emerged in Africa 250,000 years ago and stayed there exclusively for 100,000 years. Archeological evidence reveals that they initiated the use of tool making by flinting stones, using bones and animal skins (hand axe, Clovis point, bows and arrows) for survival. Many were spiritual and buried their dead, built religious figurines (Venus Figurine) and drew art that may reflect spirituality (Paleolithic Rock Art). Many practiced an egalitarian lifestyle and lived in collaboration (Captain Cook’s encounter with Aboriginals of Australia (Strayer p. 21). After the last Ice Age ended many Paleolithic people inspired a great transition and movement throughout the globe (Strayer pp ). While some, such as the Jomon of Japan, learned to live in settlements; others traveled across land bridges to new lands. This era is significant in human history because it’s the foundation of human history.

7 EXAMPLE (With a student heading included)
Key Terms and/or Second Thoughts—(Top Score—35 points + 5 points rigor = 40 points) Students will be provided with the definitions of each term. On a separate paper, students are to do the following: HEADINGS: At the top of each assignment include your heading—your full name, period you have AP World, Chapter # (-5 if not included) TERM: Write the term you are to analyze. SIGNIFICANCE: In your own words, explain why the term is historically, politically and/or socially significant. (Solid evaluation of significance = 35 points)* EVIDENCE: Whenever possible add evidence. Evidence could be an example of the term or something that you might be able to connect with the term. (5 points—these are taken from the rigor point portion of the grading. If you are unable to find evidence, make sure your analysis of the significance is strong.) EXAMPLE (With a student heading included) Wu, Allyson Period 1 Chapter 1 Dream Time: (You must write the term you are defining 1st!) Significance —Dream Time is significant, because it is a window into the ancient and present-day spirituality of Australia’s Aboriginal people. Understanding their way of thinking, gives us an insight into their world-view. In addition, when we compare the Aboriginal spirituality with other pre-historic peoples, we can see that ideas of faith were part of early cultures. Evidence— E1: Australian Aboriginal world-view E2: Venus figurines E3: Paleolithic Cave Art (You can earn 5 points in the evidence section. Of note, these are rigor points; thus, if there is no evidence, make sure your analysis in the “significance part” is thorough, because, in that case, rigor can only be earned from the quality of your analysis.)

8 HOW TO ANSWER VISUAL AND/OR DOCUMENT-BASED QUESTIONS.
(TOP SCORE 35 points + 5 rigor = 40 points—These documents can be answered in pen; you needn’t type document homework.) THE VISUAL AND READING DOCUMENTS ARE AT THE END OF EACH CHAPTER. 1ST ALWAYS OUTLINE THE INTRODUCTION. (15 points) The introduction is the background information that the author provides to the reader prior to each picture or document. . The text book’s introductions tend to run about ½ to 1 full page in length and are written just before the historical document or picture. IT IS IMPORTANT TO READ AND OUTLINE EACH INTRODUCTION BECAUSE THE INTRODUCTION INFORMS THE STUDENT ABOUT THE DOCUMENT’S SETTING AND RELEVANT HISTORY. BE INFORMED! 2ND ANSWER THE ASSIGNED QUESTION. (20 points) Visual and Written Document questions ask students to answer a “what” or “why” question. Provide your answer (what, why + your opinion). Short answer responses are required.
