3/20/13 Chapter 21, The End of World War II Aim: How was the end of WWII different than the end of WWI? Objective: Students will read for information and watch videos on several turning points at the end of WWII. Standards: RH2, RH4, WHST4 Do Now: Read the Infographic and answer “Analyzing Visuals” 1&2 on p Work Period: “The War Ends” video, and graphic organizer. Break Work!! Due 4/16/12 In your textbooks, take the practice Regents on page , #1-20. You MUST answer the DBQ’s AND #20, the essay! (Remember what happened last time many of you didn’t answer #20?) At the bottom of the page it lists where you can read to help you answer a questions if you are having difficulty . This will be graded as your 1st open book quiz of the 4th marking period- Make it count!

TURNING POINT RESULTS BATTLE OF THE BULGE (p.746-747)
This battle was the last decisive one for Germany. It marked the end of the war because of the 100,000 casualties; this weakened them beyond repair. (US victory) BATTLE OF IWO JIMA (p ) American marines fought to capture the island in the Pacific (Japanese land). American casualties were larger than Japanese casualties yet it was an American victory & one of the last battles that Japan fought. THE MANHATTAN PROJECT (p ) A project in which the US was constructing the 1st atomic bomb. On July 16th 1945 , the US dropped the 1st bomb as practice in the dessert of New Mexico. HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI (p ) Hiroshima-an important city in Japan that housed many military bases was bombed by the US in August of Nagasaki-US also bombed Nagasaki on August 15th, 1945 which marked the end of the war for Japan (Japanese surrender). UNITED NATIONS (p ) The UN was created by FDR because he believed in setting up a worldwide organization that could prevent another world war. In 1944, 30 delegates from 39 countries met to discuss the new organization. The UN is a peacekeeping organization. NUREMBERG TRIALS (p.753) 22 leaders of Nazi Germany were prosecuted: 3 acquitted, 7 given prison sentences & the remaining 12 were sentenced to death for war crimes. Trials of other low ranking officials continued until 1949. YALTA CONFERENCE & THE “BIG 3” (p ) At the Yalta Conference, the Big 3 (Stalin, Churchill & Roosevelt) met to discuss the end of the war. They agreed that European countries should create their own forms of govn’t as long as it wasn’t Fascism or Nazism. They also split up Germany into two countries (East & West Germany) so they can be “watched”. East Germany becomes Communist.
