Extemporaneous A Quick Guide
2
What is Extemp? Extemp is a limited prep speech event. It is a very informative type of speech. It is a little stressful but it’s very good preparation for other facets of debate. It’s very helpful to learn time management and is very good for organizational purposes.
3
Structure There’s a thirty minute prep time period where you learn your topic and begin to prepare followed by the actual speech which is capped by the seven minute max speech. The Draw Room is secretly scary and the actual round seems scary but is literally no sweat!
4
Drawroom The draw room is a room where you draw a topic. It is where you live and breathe during tournaments when you are doing extemp. IT IS HOME. When you get in there try and get somewhere near some plug ins or pending the tournament just try to sit near other kids from your school. Usually they will do a roll call just to make sure that you are present Once that’s done then you will get called up to draw a topic You pull three out of an envelope then put two back and tell the person who’s running the draw what topic you have chosen
5
PREPARING I hope you’ve chosen a good topic. Which means you are going to choose whatever we have the most evidence for. Tell Liam you are doing extemp and I’ll add you to the Dropbox or I can update the paper box. Sit down and do not talk. Start to organize your speech You need an introduction, points, and a conclusion that ties into the intro.
6
Speech Structure Intros can be quotes, stories, or jokes. Anything that catches the attention. Your points should have two or three bits of evidence which you need to cite in round. Conclusions should tie into the intro Intros should be thirty to forty five seconds each point should be about 1 ½ or 2 minutes. Conclusions should be around thirty seconds long.
7
Delivering Looking and sounding confident is good and you really should practice in order to be ready. Do not forget to cite your sources. Even if you are struggling don’t forget to cite it makes you sound smarter. Conclusions and intros should be thematically linked.
8
Judging It is judged on the same scale as all other speech events.
However, what judges look for usually tend to be facts, sources, and fluency. Sources should be smoothly tied into the speech Don’t just say “This is from BBC” Say “BBC on the 12th said…” Making it smooth and seamless always works and sounds better
9
Practice The best way to really understand and work through Extemp is to practice it. If you can get some friends to stick around then running through some practice is the best option.
