6 “How are introductions and conclusions similar types of writing?”
Learning Target I can plan the introduction and conclusion of my literary analysis. “How are introductions and conclusions similar types of writing?”

7 Moving On… S L A N T

8 Sharing Theme Graphic Organizers: T.L.T.
• Share, and get feedback, on each part of your organizer including claim, details, and thinking about details. Guiding Questions: * “How does this detail connect with the theme?” * “How do your details connect with each other?” * “Were there other details from the book that you chose not to use?”

9 Planning an Introduction Paragraph
Now that you have determined a theme, you are going to plan an introductory paragraph for a literary analysis about the myth of Cronus. Zoom in on the structure of the introductory paragraph. Remember that the introduction paragraph does two things: Provides a one-sentence summary of the myth. Presents a theme that is in both the myth and The Lightning Thief, which is your argument. Work with your elbow partner to plan your introduction. Use the Graphic Organizer on page 114. 10 minutes max

10 Planning an Introduction Paragraph
Compare your planning for the introductory paragraph other members of your group. Refer to the Structure of Literary Analysis chart to make sure you have all the information needed. 10 minutes max

11 Moving On… S L A N T

12 Planning a Concluding Paragraph
You are also going to take time to begin to plan your conclusion for the essay. Think-Pair-Share: “In this type of an essay, how are introductions and conclusions similar?” “How are introductions and conclusions different?” “So how did what we just did as writers when we planned our introductory paragraphs relate to what we are going to do now in planning our conclusions?”

13 Planning a Concluding Paragraph
Look at page 115. Remember that the Conclusion: Explains how mythology is important today, and why the author of the novel may have chosen to include the myth. Small Groups: Discuss the following questions as you complete the Graphic Organizer. “So how is mythology important today? The model has given you one idea, but what other ideas do you have?” What can you learn from the myth of Cronus? Why do you think Rick Riordan includes this myth in The Lightening Thief?

14 Closing TN Writing Rubric – Information/Explanatory Grades 6-8 Take out your highlighted rubric. You have already highlighted the differences in the levels in the Focus & Organization and Language columns. Today you will work with your elbow partner to highlight the differences in levels in the Development column. Keep in mind that this is one of the tools you can use to guide you in making sure you write a “great” essay when you are writing your end of unit assessment.
