Breast Cancer Information All women are at risk If detected early, the 5-year survival rate is 98 percent Men can get breast cancer, too Until we find a cure, early detection offers the best hope for long term survival.

Komen Central Virginia Race First held in 1998, 1,200 participants raised over $78,000 In 2011, almost 7,400 participants raised over $600,000 Since inception, over $5 million raised locally This year will mark the 15 th anniversary of the Central Virginia Race

Where Does the Money Go? 75% stays in Central Virginia to fund breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment projects 25% funds Komens National Research Grant Program 2012 Community Grants totaling $587,944 were recently awarded to 13 local programs.

The IMPACT of Teams Last year, teams recruited 4,633 of the total 7,388 participants & raised $256,475! Thanks to the fundraising contributions of our teams – Komen Central Virginia awarded grants to the following: Access Now, Richmond, VA Augusta Regional Free Clinic, Fishersville, VA Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation, Richmond, VA Centra-Southside Community Hospital, Farmville, VA Central Virginia Health Services, New Canton, VA Community Memorial Healthcenter, South Hill, VA CrossOver Ministry, Richmond, VA Ellen Shaw de Paredes Breast Cancer Foundation, Richmond, VA Fan Free Clinic, Richmond, VA Halifax Regional Health System, South Boston, VA Nueva Vida, Richmond, VA VCU Massey Cancer Center, Richmond, VA Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA

Why Form a Team? Its more FUN than participating alone! 337 teams participated in the 2011 Race Form a Team to rally around someone you know that is fighting the battle now or to honor a loved one Teams are eligible for prizes, including: Largest Team in each category Overall top Fundraising Team Top Fundraising Team in each category Best T-shirt Design Create your own Team T-shirts Your imagination is the limit! Please no pink t-shirts as we reserve pink to honor Survivors Be sure to ask about the official team insignia graphic No Race for the Cure logos, please

The High School Team Challenge (HSTC) was started by a survivors daughter, Lindsay Avner. It was after participating in the Race for the Cure with her survivor mother that she noticed that a whole age group was missing……teenagers/high school students. The High School Team Challenge

The goals of the HSTC are to: Increase breast cancer awareness among high school students Raise funds to help support the Komen for the Cure promise Increase participation of high school students in the Komen Race for the Cure Have fun while positively affecting the community

Kids for the Cure® is a 1K run open to children ages 6 to 12. Only children are allowed on the course. Kids T-shirt Art Contest Children ages 6 to 12 are encouraged to submit artwork as part of the Kids T-shirt Art Contest. Entry deadline is March 30, 2012. The winning design will be featured on the Kids for the Cure® t-shirts.

Why we Race for the Cure One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. 6,190 women in Virginia will be diagnosed in 2012 Between 50 and 60 men in Virginia will be diagnosed in 2012 1,110 women in Virginia will die from breast cancer in 2012 Times are Tough… but so is Breast Cancer
