Monarchy: system of government in which ONE CENTRAL Ruler reigns. Leadership is hereditary. Republic: system of government in which supreme power is SHARED by THE PEOPLE and their representatives. People have the freedom to choose their leaders.

1.What was the Articles of Confederation? 1st plan of government meant to unite the states. Called for a firm league of friendship among the states to fight England. individual state governments given more power than the national government

Fear a strong central government could abuse its powers similar to what the British monarchy had done to the colonies

It established a Republic-making it very unlikely for America to ever have a monarchy government. It established the Northwest Ordinance: law that provided guidelines for Western territories to be carved into states. America won the Revolution under this system of government

Weakness: The National government did not have the power to tax Negative Outcome? National government was broke. Unable to pay salaries for Revolutionary war veterans, war debt, and any other expenses.

The National government could not control or regulate interstate and foreign trade Negative Outcome? States discouraged from trading with one another since they each had their own trade laws. The government couldn’t monitor exports and imports.

What was Shays’ Rebellion? When did Shays’ Rebellion happen? Where did Shays’ Rebellion take place? How did Shays’ Rebellion effect the country?

16 1.Who was Daniel Shays? Revolutionary war veteran, honored hero, and
former captain of the Continental Army. Fought in Battles of Lexington and Concord and Bunker Hill

17 2. Why was Daniel Shays’ upset?
Returned home after war, can’t pay taxes on his farm land He’s broke from not receiving promised salary from Congress His farmland gets taken away by Massachusetts courts and is about to be thrown in debtors prison.

18 3. What was Shays’ Rebellion?
2,000 farmers trained by and led by Daniel Shays’ attack and burn courthouses and property throughout the state of Massachusetts It’s purpose was to stop the courts unjust action of sending people to debtor prison It was stopped by the Massachusetts state militia just before attacking the state arsenal in Springfield.

The event gained national attention convinced many Americans that the National Government was too weak (couldn’t stop a small group of rebelling farmers armed with little more than pitch forks! ) This event was the MAIN REASON that convinced our Founding Fathers to revise the AOC. The founding fathers realized that there was a need for a Stronger National government.
