Good Morning! PREPARED: Climate Packet Pencil Highlighter PERFORMING: on the blue card, complete your warm up “Climate and weather are a result of complex interactions between the sun’s energy, surfaces on the earth, and the atmosphere. Today, many scientists are concerned that human activities are also affecting climates worldwide” Respond to the statement above. What do you think the statement means? Can you make any connections?
2
Activity 58: The Causes of Climate
Key Concepts REVIEW : The sun is the major source of energy for phenomena on earth’s surface, including ocean currents, winds, the water cycle, and other factors that influence weather and climate. Factors that influence climate include the heating and cooling of land and water, ocean currents, latitude, elevation, landforms and global wind currents Oceans have a major effect on climate, because water in the oceans hold a large amount of heat. Key Vocabulary Altitude Climate Climatologist Landform Latitude Ocean current
3
Today: Key Concepts: Learning
Human activities are also affecting climates worldwide Learning Explain how a change in climate can be measured by using at least two key vocabulary words as evidence to support your thinking.
4
Chasing Ice Chasing Ice Key Vocabulary
5
Weather The changes we see in the atmosphere, usually described by temperature, wind, and precipitation over a period of hours and days.
6
Climate The general weather that characterizes a place over a long period of time, helping us understand the normal variations of weather in that place.
7
Atmosphere The mixture of gases encompassing the earth that provides the air we breathe and protects the planet from UV radiation from the sun; extends 20 miles up from the surface of the Earth
8
QUICK CHECK IN Use your cards: (a, b, c)
What describes the precipitation, wind and temperature over a period of hours and days? Climate Weather Atmosphere
9
QUICK CHECK IN Use your cards: (a, b, c)
What describes the temperature, precipitation and wind over a long period of time? Climate Weather Atmosphere
10
QUICK CHECK IN Use your cards: (a, b, c)
A mixture of gases encompassing the earth that provides air we breathe and protection from UV rays is the… Climate Weather Atmosphere
11
Glacier A large mass of slow moving ice, formed as successive snowfalls are compacted over time.
12
Calving The act of an iceberg falling off the face of the glacier into the sea.
13
Carbon Dioxide One of the primary gases that compose the atmosphere, produced during respiration of plants and animals, organic decomposition, and in the burning of fossil fuels; though naturally occurring in the atmosphere, increases in CO2 are linked to our rising global temperature
14
QUICK CHECK IN Use your cards: (a, b, c) What is carbon dioxide?
A gas created by the burning of fossil fuels A gas that is not naturally occurring A secondary gas
15
QUICK CHECK IN Use your cards: (a, b, c)
What describes the temperature, precipitation and wind over a long period of time? Climate Weather Atmosphere
16
QUICK CHECK IN Use your cards: (a, b, c)
What is a large mass of slow moving ice? Glacier Calving Atmosphere
17
Ice Cores A cylindrical length of ice, obtained by drilling deep into ice sheets and glaciers. Similar to a tree ring, ice cores show yearly snow accumulation, and hold tiny air bubbles frozen in the ice that scientists use to understand the history of our climate
18
Glacial Retreat The process by which glaciers melt at a faster rate than the snow can accumulate, resulting in a low of glacial ice
19
Climate Change Changes to the global climate patterns as a result of increased CO2 in the atmosphere.
20
QUICK CHECK IN Use your cards: (a, b, c)
Why do scientists use ice cores to measure climate? Because ice cores show yearly snow accumulation and hold tiny bubbles of air Because ice cores show how cold it was a certain year Because ice cores show daily evaporation patterns
21
EXIT TICKET Explain how a change in climate can be measured by using at least two key vocabulary words as evidence to support your thinking. Sentence starter: A change in climate can be measured _________. Do you have any confusions from today? Add a question if you need to!
