Simple Machines
2
Simple Machines Machines are tools that make jobs easier by:
Changing the size of the force Changing the direction of the force Increasing the speed or distance the object is moved
3
Simple Machines Inclined Plane Wedge Screw
4
Simple Machines Lever Pulley Wheel & Axle
5
Mechanical Advantage Mechanical Advantage (MA) is the number of times a machine multiplies the force being applied Ideal mechanical advantage (IMA) is the number of times the applied force is multiplied under ideal conditions. This assumes no friction!
6
Mechanical Advantage Actual mechanical advantage (AMA) is the number of times the applied force is multiplied under real conditions
7
Calculating IMA We can calculate IMA for simple machines with this formula. Where dE is the distance of effort and dR is the distance of resistance.
8
Calculating IMA For a ramp 10m long and 2m high: dE=ramp length=10m
dE=ramp length=10m dR= ramp Height=2m

Calculating AMA

Efficiency Efficiency tells us how efficent a machine is and is expressed as a percent. Efficiency = WOut/Win x 100 OR Efficiency = AMA/IMA x 100
