1 Numeracy St. Mary’s Sept.21, 2018

2 Guess My Rule Whiteboard markers, vertical surfaces and random groups. Give me a number between 1-10, input +3 = output. Ask 3 times and then have them discuss the rule as a group, then we will talk about as group. And what strategies they used. Have a group come up with their own rule and their partners guess the rule, and have the class guess. How can this work in you classroom.

3 Gr.2 or 3 question. Discuss strategies used to solve the problem, would some version work in your classroom? Make sure to have snap cubes available for this activity. How they could use it in their classroom. Please use the snaps cubes so you can see how your students can use it. Talk about the strategies they use.

4 The word “fun” has a vowel-to-consonant ratio of 1:2
Can someone explain that to the class? Find 3 words with a vowel-to-consonant ratio of 2:3. How did you figure it out? Extension: Choose a vowel-to consonant ratio and have your group find 3 words for it.

5 What strategies did you use to figure this question out
What strategies did you use to figure this question out? - In your groups go back and fourth answering the benchmark. How can you use this in your classroom? - Idea use shapes. Question is from Developing Math Fluency Gr.5-8- Grayson Wheatley.

6 What does learning math look like, sound like, feel like?
Small groups discuss what this looks like in your class.

7 The Math Classroom in 2018 Small groups discuss this concept. Where do you see yourself on this continuum?

8 Teaching Through Problem Solving
Random Groups- cards, popsicle sticks, random group generator, etc. - Takes away stigmas, learn to work with anyone. Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces-Whiteboard, windows, etc. -Quick easy formative assessment. -Risk taking - Everyone has access to learning space. Problem Solving - low floor, high ceiling tasks- so all students can be engaged. -all learner can have a voice -take risks, persevere, collaborate

9 Collaboration time In grade level groups, explore and investigate the COMING TO KNOW NUMBER or Developing Math Fluency or Textbook, Super Source resources and, with the help of your program of studies, find three problems that link to you curriculum. Try them out with your students. Use random groups, vertical surfaces, one pen!
