Provoked by teaching on church discipline What about the persistent sinner? What is the heart of forgiveness?
Church discipline and forgiveness are different for the individual and the church. This includes how we view outsiders
Three things at the heart of forgiveness: (1) seeing a bigger picture, (2) Loving others, (3) loving God

12. The Heart of Forgiveness
(1) Seeing a bigger picture Forgiveness requires understanding (2) Loving others Forgiveness requires compassion (3) Loving God Forgiveness requires piety
At the heart of this parable are three things
1. Seeing that in the bigger scope of things, what you are forgiven for is greater than what you forgive
2. You ought to have love and compassion on others
3. If you love God, forgive your fellows

13. Seeing a Bigger Picture
Forgiveness is also called mercy For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment. James 2:13 Those who fear judgment show mercy
It is easier to forgive others when we can realize we need forgiveness, often for sins far worse than others

Mercy is a manifestation of ultimate wisdom But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. James 3:17

Be wise: consider your own forgiveness "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matthew 6:14-15

Be wise: consider your own forgiveness "And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:11

17. Loving Others
Consider the mind of those who wronged you ….I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 1 Timothy 1:13
Love is NOT an emotion, but a mindset of action. Otherwise, love would not work with forgiveness.
When we put ourselves into the shoes of others, we are more able to forgive. Jesus understood that many who were killing Him did so not understanding who He was

18. Loving Others
Consider the mind of those who wronged you
……You ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow Corinthians 2:7

19. Loving Your Father
God’s desire for unity Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Philippians 2:1-2
Ultimately, forgiving others manifests your love for your Father, as those you forgive are also His children

20. Forgiving For Your Own Sake
There are many reasons we ought to forgive (1) The Command of God (2) Obtaining our own forgiveness (3) Avoiding worldliness and foolish mindsets What about our own joy?
At the heart of this parable are three things
1. Seeing that in the bigger scope of things, what you are forgiven for is greater than what you forgive
2. You ought to have love and compassion on others
3. If you love God, forgive your fellows

21. The place for Spiritual Fruit in your life is limited by the amount of worldiness in your life. Not forgiving is a work of the flesh, and takes away the room for joy in your life. You cannot fill one cup with two drinks;
One cannot be filled with light

22. The Quality of Mercy
The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes. Portia, Merchant of Venice
Mercy blesses both the giver and the receiver
