In all essays you need to show: A good overall understanding of the text Learnt quotes (except unseen poetry) Be able to explore the meaning and effect of events from the start/middle/end of the text In some essays you need to show: Understanding of context in: Shakespeare, A Christmas Carol or The Sign of Four and The Anthology poems Ability to compare the poems: The Anthology poems & Unseen poetry comparison essay

Timing – plan 5 mins. Write 40 minutes Shakespeare Extract & Essay Exam Question AQA Literature Place Mat. Structure of the essay Intro – link to the question. Explain which 3 events in the play you will focus on Idea 1: Explore either the extract or the whole play and context. Repeat with Idea 2 Explore either the extract or the whole play & context. Anthology Comparison Sentence starters: In the poem we see… this suggests/implies/infers/conveys… The poet implies/shows… Linking this to the time/place/intentions Intro – link to question. Explain the meaning of both poems briefly and how they link. Can include context. Use three ideas/adjectives to shape the essay. Throughout the essay– poem in front of you, choose relevant quotes/moments from the poem and analyse the language, structure and effect of these quotes and then link/compare to examples and analysis from the poem in your memory that you are comparing it with. You must use connectives of comparison. Use context & effect. Conclude – Short summary of how they compare You must write about both poems. You must include context You must use quotes You will only have one of the poems in front of you. You choose the other and compare from memory. Use the names of the poets throughout your essay and explore what they thought and why?
