Explain how tidal waves are generated.
Differentiate between the various types of tides.

3. Tidal Generated Waves:
The gravitational pull from the Sun and Moon causes high and low tides
Moon has a greater influence because it is closer to Earth

4. Tides Differ Around the World:
One high tide and one low tide each day = Diurnal
Two two high tides and two low tides each day = Semi-diurnal

5. Spring and Neap Tides:
Spring Tides: occur when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are in a straight line
Occurs at new and full moons
Have the greatest effect on tides
Neap Tides: occur when the Sun, Moon, and Earth make a right angle
Occurs at 1st and 3rd quarter moons

7. Extreme Tides: Bay of Fundy- Nova Scotia, Canada
Largest tidal range in the world
Approximately ft (FL is about 4 ft)

9. Tidal Bores:
Occur when incoming tides produce a wave that flows into a narrow area (river, bay)
Only occur in a few places around the world

10. Intertidal Habitat: “Tide Pools”
Covered with water during high tide, and exposed to air during low tide
Must adapt to harsh conditions like waves & drying out
