Themes in “The Nightingale”
Students will determine the theme of “The Nightingale” and create other stories based on the same themes. Follow the directions below to complete the activity. Get into teams of 4 and brainstorm possible themes or lessons learned in “The Nightingale”. One team member travels to the other groups to examine found themes. Discusses possible themes with class. Log in computers and open Google Chrome. Type in storybird.com and login. Click on the Class Code tab and type in the code your teacher gives you. Click Join Class. Click on Assignments-Theme. Read and follow the directions to make another story with the same theme as “The Nightingale”. Click Do This Assignment. Choose Use this Art and Click Multi-page Picture Book. Click the Save button periodically. When you have your story complete, Click the Menu button at the bottom. Choose Publish. Scroll down and Click Assignment, then choose Theme. Click Publish. This task uses: Common Core/NG Standard(s): CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.9 Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics. TEACHER NOTES: Teacher’s name/ D’nea Stanley/ School: DeQuincy Middle School Grade Level/Subject: 6th ELA Task Card Level: Three Special Directions/Considerations: The teacher needs to have a StoryBird educator account set-up ( storybird.com), create a class, write down the class code for students. Each students needs a laptop. Activity Evaluation: Theme Rubric attached Prerequisites for students: The students should have already read “The Nightingale”.
