What are articles? The articles in English are the (definite article), a and an (indefinite articles). - Articles define a noun as specific or non-specific. The United States of America. A teacher. (not a specific teacher) An intelligent student. (any intelligent student)

Indefinite Articles – A / AN
Indefinite article: A/ AN (singular nouns) A book An umbrella A pencil An apple A ruler An ice-cream a + consonant sound an + vowel sound We use A/ AN when: we talk about something new: She’s wearing a nice dress.

we say what something is or what job someone does: This is a test. She is a school director. we describe something: It’s a lovely day! we don’t specify the person or thing we are referring to: I met a boy.

Definite Article - THE Definite article: THE (singular/ plural nouns)
The United States The Sun – The Earth The President of Brazil We use THE when: we are talking about something for the second time: I bought a dress and a skirt. The dress was very expensive.

Brasilia is the capital of Brazil. it is clear what we are talking about from the situation: Pass me the salt, please. expressions: play the piano go to the doctor go to the cinema in the south.

The British Isles But Easter Island (only one, not a group of islands) With names of mountains, rivers, oceans, seas, canals, deserts, forests. The Atlantic (ocean) - The Mediterranean (sea) - The Nile (river) - The Suez (canal) - The Sahara (desert) - The Alps (mountains)

Zero Article We don’t use a/an or the: (zero article)
With names of lakes: Lake Tahoe Lake Eyre With names of individual mountains: Mount Everest Mount Etna With abstract nouns: Happiness Sadness With plural nouns when we speak of them in general: Birds have wings
