2 NOotka of Vancouver island
Late 1800's, Northwest coast peoples = competitive in many things. Many were headhunters who attacked their victims when sleeping. Nootka of Vancouver Island, where dreaded warriors. War Chiefs  wore cedar-bark corselet painted red and black. Carried  stone and bone clubs. Cedar-bark loincloth Bearskin cloak In war, war Chiefs wore the clothes and his men went naked . Carved wooden head resembles trophies of war, but  has a symbolic purpose.

3 Makah Late 1800's ~ early 1900's. true whale hunters of North west coast Launch expeditions up to ten canoes.  warriors went hunting for whales  stayed at sea for more than one day.  Wounded whale       - tow sealskin float & canoe        - meat & oil divided with entire village

4 Tlingit Late 1800's Most populous and powerful peoples on the northwest coast. Impressed early explorers. Wide-brimmed rain hats, full beards, wooden lip-plugs and shell nose-ornaments was common to wear. Struck newcomers  as unlike any other Native Americans they have ever seen.

5 Nootka 1778 Homes on Northwest Coast -made of logs.
       -Very big for extended families.        -floors make of dirt/sand.        -Benches and mats.  Has large wooden statues were family emblems. Three basic garments      -an oblong robe of cedar bark, used as a cloak.        -a skirt or a toga; a triangular rain cape.      -finally a conical woven hat.
