1 Types of Maps Gallery Walk and Notes

2 Gallery Walk There are 6 Stations in the room
Use your Graphic Organizer to complete each station Fill in each box and answer the questions You will rotate through the stations in groups Clockwise rotation You will have 5 minutes per station to complete the organizer Pay attention to the Artifact Numbers – they match the numbers on the stations

3 Maps Notes These notes will replace the gallery walk if a student is absent or loses their graphic organizer The notes go in order with the artifacts on the graphic organizer

4 Globes Globes are the truest representation of the earth
Shapes and sizes of countries are the most accurate Globes usually show political boundaries (country borders) Some include physical features Globes are set at an angle to match the earth’s tilt to the sun Disadvantages: The small size makes them hard to use for detail and direction

5 Maps Flat Representations of earth Three main types Disadvantages
Three main types Political, physical, thematic Disadvantages They distort the shape of the earth Have specific purposes – physical features maps cannot be used as a road map

6 Map projections A Method of putting an image of the globe onto a flat surface using longitude and latitude. There are many types of map projections, all have their advantages and disadvantages. Mollweide Interrupted – This map is used mainly to show the oceans of the world. Miller – This popular map is considered to be a good, not perfect, 2D representation of earth. Robinson – Considered the most accurate flat representation of the earth with little distortion of continents.

7 Map projections cont. Disadvantages: They distort the sizes of continents or do not include all parts of the earth and may not be good for directions.

8 Physical Maps These maps show the physical features of the earth
Mountains Oceans Rivers Elevation Deserts Topographical maps include detailed elevations and some are in 3D You can touch and feel the different elevations Disadvantages: Landmasses may be distorted Reading elevations on topographical maps can be difficult

9 Political Maps Show man-drawn boundaries
Countries States Provinces Territories Cities Counties Neighborhoods Show government divisions between countries, states… Disadvantages: These maps change throughout time as new countries are created and existing countries are taken over by other countries

10 Thematic Maps Display specific information
Interstates Hiking trails Data Weather Buildings Populations You must always check the title of the map to see what it is used for Disadvantages: These maps are made for specific purposes only and are not used for anything else

11 Which map would you use To give directions? To research vegetation?
To see government borders? To look at mountain ranges?
